OLC: Genocide State Crime and Myanmar’s Genocide of the Rohingya
Professor's Penny Green talk will adopt a state crime framing of genocide (critiquing international law approaches) to explore Myanmar’s ongoing genocide of its Muslim Rohingya population. It will emphasize understanding genocide as a process, rather than an event and will discuss data gathered during fieldwork in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Penny Green is Professor of Law and Globalisation and former Head of the Law School at Queen Mary University of London. She was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2019. Professor Green has published eleven books and numerous articles. She has published extensively on state crime theory (including her monographs with Tony Ward, State Crime: Governments, Violence and Corruption 2004 and State crime and Civil Activism: on the dialectics of repression and resistance 2019), genocide, state violence, Turkish criminal justice and politics, ‘natural’ disasters, mass expulsions and resistance to state violence. She has a long track record of researching in hostile environments and her most recent projects include a comparative study of civil society resistance to state crime in Turkey, Tunisia, Colombia, PNG, Kenya and Myanmar; forced evictions in Palestine/Israel and Myanmar’s genocide against the Rohingya. In 2015 she and her colleagues Thomas MacManus and Alicia de la Cour Venning published the seminal ‘Countdown to Annihilation: Genocide in Myanmar’ and in March 2018 ‘The Genocide is Over: the genocide continues’. Professor Green is Founder and Director of the award winning International State Crime Initiative (ISCI): http://www.law.qmul.ac.uk/research/centres/isci/index.html and co-editor in Chief of the international journal State Crime: http://www.plutojournals.com/scj/. She is a member of the Gaza Tribunal and was appointed a judge for the Palestine Book Awards in 2024. She is completing a comparative analysis of the Palestinian and Rohingya genocides and her book on the Rohingya genocide, Chronicle of a Genocide Foretold: Myanmar’s annihilation of the Rohingya will be published by Rutger’s University Press in October 2026. She currently holds a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship and is working on a new monograph exploring the humanitarian camp as a site of genocidal reproduction.

OLC: In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union
In a Yiddish story, a death camp survivor asks a woman to write down his testimony, which she translates into Russian, constantly checking to see whether she got it right. The Jewish population of Kyiv makes a pilgrimage to the site of the Babyn Yar massacre on the anniversary of the event. A single teacup becomes the focal point of a Jewish family's complex history. Despite the official view in the Soviet Union that Jewish deaths should be subsumed under the larger tragedy of Nazi Germany's invasion, Jews in the USSR profoundly engaged with thinking about and memorializing the Holocaust, addressing it in a wide range of literary works. The significance of the texts they wrote, however, has remained largely neglected. In this presentation, Harriet Murav and Sasha Senderovich tell of their work identifying, researching, and translating some of these stories; they will also read selections from their translations. Harriet Murav is a Center for Advanced Study Professor Emerita in the Departments of Comparative and World Literature and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The author of six monographs, five co-edited books, and articles on Russian and Yiddish literature, her co-edited volume on the Yiddish poet David Hofshteyn will appear in 2026. Her new project, Living Out of Time, examines time, waiting, and wartime in contemporary Ukrainian poetry. Sasha Senderovich is Associate Professor of Slavic Languages & Literatures and of International Studies at the University of Washington. He is the author of How the Soviet Jew Was Made (2022). Murav and Senderovich have co-translated David Bergelson’s Judgment (2017) and In the Shadow of the Holocaust (2025), the selection of Yiddish and Russian stories on which they will be presenting at Pomona College.
